Change

One of my favorite thinkers/leaders, Tony Morgan had some great thoughts about change over on his blog. Here are some of my favorites:

It’s a lot easier to embrace change when you’re the one initiating it.

Change without vision is chaos.

Many times the most successful or positive changes also produce the most criticism.

Change doesn’t happen unless someone is responsible to deliver it.

It’s easier to embrace change when we see it rather than when we hear about it.

Change, even the best kind of change, will always generate some measure of fear and anger and sadness. In other words, someone will always despise the change and let you know about it.

It’s almost impossible to change a change that previously worked.

Organizations that don’t change die.

Slow change is rarely positive change.

If the change is easy, you’re probably not changing enough.

If everyone already recognizes the need for change, you’re obviously not the leader.

"Rightly Dividing the Truth"

OK, every church has those people who...shall we say 'think' they are spiritual, but are in all actuality some of the most nonspiritual Christians you could ever meet. It should be noted that they feel their way is the only way, their music is the only good music, their preference is the best, them, them, them etc.

Every now and then they feel 'lead by God' to be anonymous prophets - AKA, spineless critics. They send unsigned letters, notes etc to you. This week one of those precious people posted a religious news article on the bulletin board in the church hallway for people to read. The article which you can see below is critical of churches and "so called" pastors who adjust their service schedule or show the Super Bowl inside the "Sanctuary". Normally I just grin at this sort of thing and move on, but the title of this column is "Rightly Dividing the Truth." I take issue with article because it is pathetically Non-Biblical. I'm TOTALLY OK with someone having different preferences or traditions than me, but you better not try to distort God's Word in the process. The other reason I would like to draw attention to the article is because for the last month in our student ministry we have been discussing what the 'church' is and is not from a Biblical viewpoint.

So, I'm asking our students to comment on this post and point out the errors you can find based on the teaching we've been examining in the Bible during FUEL over the last month. Let's see how many you can catch.

Super Bowl Redux

Note: I intended to write this peace yesterday, but with Colts loss (I'm a huge fan) I needed a day to get over the loss to the Saints.

My 10 thoughts from Sunday's Big Game.

10.) 106 million people watched the Super Bowl. 1/3 of our population watched the Super Bowl! It was the largest TV audience ever, breaking the record of the last M*A*S*H episode. This is remarkable in this day of endless viewing options.

Now, if the NFL owners and players screw up what they have going in their CBA negotiations and have a lockout of any kind - they would be the biggest fools on earth. The money pie is huge...8 Billion dollars huge! You can figure out a way for everyone to get a nice slice.

9.) I hated the Colts losing. Hated it. But if they were going to lose to a team in the NFL - I'm cool with it being the Saints. Drew Brees is a good dude. Despite the disappointment I felt after the game, seeing Drew holding his cute little boy after the game while his eyes filled with tears...that was special.

8.) Seriously, how long will we have to pay for Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson's "wardrobe malfunction"? I don't have anything against The Who, but we need a more relevant halftime experience. The only thing that held that act together was an amazing stage production. That was wow. Here are some safe, but relevant suggestions for next year: 1) a country collage of Toby Keith, Kenny Chesney, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill and Carrie Underwood. 2) Kings of Leon, Coldplay or Maroon 5. 3) U2. OR, put these guys on a 7 second delay: 1) Jay Z and Rihanna. 2) The Black Eyed Peas.

7.) The biggest play of the game form a football perspective was not the interception, the onside kick, but Pierre Garcon's drop in the second quarter. Manning hit Pierre in the hands around the 50 yard line, with about 25 more yards of running room. The Colts are almost guaranteed to score again, which would have eliminated one of the Saints possessions. Colts would have had a two possession lead, and I believe won the game.

6.) Peyton Manning is the most unjustly scrutinized player in sports. Maybe in sports history. He throws for 333 yds, and TD and a INT that people with real football knowledge know was on Reggie Wayne's unusual break to the ball - and somehow we are back to the Peyton can't win when the big game is on the line. I won't defend him long, because I'm admittedly partial, but give me a break.

5.) My Favorite Super Bowl Ads:
1.) The Doritos "Play Nice" (The little boy putting smack down on his mommas date.
2.) Lebron vs. Dwight vs. Larry Bird
3.) Betty White Snickers Bar
4.) Leno, Oprah, Letterman
5.) Jim Nance, FLOW TV Spineless man
6.) E-trade Jealous Baby Girlfriend
7.) Audi Green Police

4.) My Least Favorite Super Bowl Ads:
1.) Career Builder - Casual Day. Still have a little vomit in my mouth over that.
2.) Go Daddy Ads - How many miles of slutiness can they get out of these?
3.) Monster.com - Gopher/Beaver, Whatever it was it was weird and made no sense.
4.) Coke Sleep walking - Yawn.
5.) Charles Barkley/Taco Bell - yeah, Barkley needs a super size combo meal.
6.) Audi Green Police (Yeah, I know it's on both lists. If the Green Police weren't intended to be satirical, then I didn't like it.)

3.) Speaking of commercials. The Pam/Tim Tebow commercial. You know the one that got the NOW (National Organization of you better think like we do or you’re not a real Woman group) and other feminist groups all stirred up into a tizzy? Here is what I think: The groups that were crying that this ad was offensive and demeaning to women. The groups calling for CBS to pull the ad - These groups should be embarrassed of themselves. I don't mean a little flush in the cheeks embarrassed, I mean head in the sand, go on vacation for a month, profusely apologetic type of embarrassed at themselves for creating a firestorm over this ad. I emphasized should for a reason.

Terry O'Neil, the president of NOW, responded to the commercial by saying, "I am blown away at the celebration of the violence against women in it," she said. "That’s what comes across to me even more strongly than the anti-abortion message. I myself am a survivor of domestic violence, and I don’t find it charming. I think CBS should be ashamed of itself."

So let me get this straight...Tim Tebow and Focus on the Family are "celebrating violence against women"? I'm sorry, but these assertions can only be described as idiocy, absurd, madness and lunacy.

2.) I think Jim Nance may be one of the best sports broadcasters of all time. He is so underrated.

1.) I feel a little pit in my stomach because it has just occurred to me that football is on hiatus until September...ah well, we have March Madness soon.

Let me begin by saying the following thoughts are my opinions, lest the comments and e-mails get too wild.

Here are some news items of late that I find ridiculous:

5.) The Mark McGwire 'confession'. In his interview with Bob Costas, which I watched live on MLB network, McGwire tried to make the case that the 'performance enhancing drugs' that he took did not help his performance. He tried to sell us on the fact that he used them only to recover from injury.

Students all over this country have a new excuse when their teacher catches them cheating. "Mrs. Teacher, you don't understand...these answers I have written under my sleeve didn't help me make a good grade on the test - they only they helped me remember the answers. It's not cheating."

Dear Mark,

I am not the smartest person in the world, but I'm not stupid. So quit insulting my intelligence with this PR nonsense.

4.) This "Jersey Shore" craze. I watched 3 minutes of it and said to myself, "My 11 month old's Baby Einstein videos are more entertaining than this."

Plus, Michelle Obama said she wouldn't let her kids watch it - let's follow the First Lady's advice.

3) Receiving a letter to let you know that your baby will be taken off life support. Forget the moral and ethical issues at stake in this story. It sounds like the parents were given the news by means of a letter. I would prefer a face to face meeting, no matter the discomfort or chance for it to become volatile.

My liberal friends keep telling me of the wonderful health care system to our north in Canada. No thanks.

2) Liberals over thinking. Read an article in Newsweek yesterday where a self professed moderate was criticizing President Obama for leading with his head, not his heart. In the same article he was critical of President Bush for doing what he wants Obama to do.

I know it is required that liberal Journalists take a shot at George W. Bush or Sarah Palin in each report they make - regardless of the topic, but when they do I just wish they would do so with a little more logic.

I expect http://www.salon.com/ or The Huffington Post to be irrational and sensationalist, but come on Newsweek...you can do better.

And the #1 most insanely ridiculous item of the day:

1) The National organization for Women and other feminist extremist groups calling for Pam and Tim Tebow's commercial celebrating life to be cut from the Super Bowl. The story can be read HERE.

Let me make several points:
a) The headlines keep referring to the ad as an "Anti-Abortion" commercial. This journalistic manipulation began a few years ago when some genius discovered that it was easier to ridicule groups like Focus on the Family, and the American Family Association by referring to them as "Anti-Abortion" instead of "Pro-Life". These same slime balls who have convinced themselves that they simply report and do not push ideologies would never refer to "Pro-Choice" groups as "Pro-Abortion".

My honest feeling is that the ideological tide may be turning on the Abortion issue, and groups like Planned Parenthood and the NOW are scared to death.

b) The commercial is designed to celebrate life through the story of Pam Tebow choosing to go ahead with a risky pregnancy against her doctor's advice. The result: the birth of Tim Tebow, whom Peter King, acclaimed sportswriter, refers to as "too good to be true". King is not referencing his stellar career in college football, but his exemplary life off the field.

Terry O'Neill, the president of the National Organization for Women, said she had respect for the private choices made by women such as Pam Tebow but condemned the planned ad as "extraordinarily offensive and demeaning."

So Terry, let me get this straight: A 30 second clip encouraging people to celebrate life and consider other options than abortion is "extraordinarily offensive and demeaning"???

Are you serious? Or, do you just have a Rolodex of responses to any other ideology than your own?

Then again, one of America's greatest thinkers - Jemhu Greene, president of the New York-based Women's Media Center, said that the Super Bowl was an event "designed to bring Americans together."

I don't know about you miss Greene, but as a Colts fan I don't give a rip about coming together with Saints fans next week. Furthermore miss Greene, Roger Goodell would like you to know that the Super Bowl has been a global event for quite some time now. Even the half time show will be performed by some of our musical friends from the U.K.

c) Where is the outrage from women's groups against companies like GoDaddy who will use the sexual exploitation of women to sell their products? Where ya at?

d) Isn't it interesting that a group that promotes itself as "pro-choice", vehemently opposed to CBS choosing what commercials it wants to air?

Ladies and Gentlemen, this is America. If you are offended by Pam Tebow's story and Tim Tebow's convictions then you can purchase for less than $10 at your neighborhood Walmart a brand new piece of technology called the remote control, and change the channel.

Some thoughts

It's been a long while since I've done some serious thought dumping at www.bradraby.com, so here goes!

Thought #1: I've never said "I wish I had a fever and was sick to my stomach" until today. My little girl Rylee is really sick for the first time. I hate her being sick. I wish I could take it away from her. I'd gladly be sick in her place.

Thought #2: Youth in Revolt, the latest R-rated high school debauchery comedy comes out this Friday. I noticed under the ratings the phrase, "Parent's strongly cautioned." Dear parent, If you let your child be entertained by this garbage - it is the child who needs to be strongly cautioned. Cautioned that their parents lack of wisdom can result in a generational slide filled with bad decisions that lead to pain and regret. Dad and mom...Be Smart. Kids, be smart even when mom and dad aren't.

Thought #3: I spent 4 hours helping an 82 year old woman install a new computer and sync her IPod with podcasts she had downloaded. I really enjoyed it. I like helping elderly people with technology, and I really find it awesome that an 82 year old likes using a computer and IPod. Plus, we had some great theological conversation ranging from dispensationalism to reformed theology.

Thought #4: I don't think wearing a suit and tie on Sunday is a sign of spirituality as a Christian minister. I do think it is a sign that one is lacking in spiritual maturity if they think it does.

Thought #5: Traditions that at one time make local churches very effective for the Kingdom, can eventually over time and several cultural shifts force those same churches to be very ineffective for the Kingdom.

Thought #6: It often takes more energy and effort to convince people to "buy in" to a vision, than it actually does to carry out the vision.

Thought #7: The reason for #6: We are not very good at Philippians 2:3.

Thought #8: The Smokey Mountain Brewery's Ale Steak is delicious.

Thought #9: I married a woman above my league. By far my most significant accomplishment.

Thought #10: The BCS/Bowl System isn't about money so much as it's about the % of the money that goes to the big power schools/conferences. You see a playoff system would produce huge money, but the pieces of the pie would end up being more evenly distributed to smaller schools/conferences that had great seasons. The bowl system guarantees the SEC, Big 10, Big 12, Pac 10 etc a HUGE piece of pie with guaranteed bowl tie ins. A playoff system couldn't guarantee that. Ironically the NCAA is a non-profit organization.

Our Students have given over $800 to The Big Give Initiative to help needy families at Christmas.

FUEL will be mobile this coming week. We'll start here in the Upper Room at South Harriman Baptist Church, then we're going to Walmart to purchase toys, shoes, clothing etc. for families this Christmas. It's going to be fun showing the Love of Jesus and the true meaning of Christmas to people this year.

The Big Give

I hate to admit this, but every now and then I get inspired by something Oprah does. I was espeacially inspired when she did "Oprah's Big Give". It birthed the seeds of a vision for The Big Give in our Student Ministry here at South Harriman Baptist Church. Come along with me for a few seconds on a journey to show Big Love to needy children this Christmas.

We are partnering with a local elementary school to make this Christmas season the best ever for some local children.
Here's the plan: We want to raise $500.00 to take a family, specifically the kids to Walmart for a Christmas shopping spree. Imagine the look and emotions of a needy child running through Walmart picking out what they want for Christmas. We want to capture it on video, and make it a memory to last forever.
How can you help? Would you be willing to sacrifice to make this the best Christmas ever for some needy families? We know it's not about the gifts, but the love of Christ shining through us.
Would you be willing to partner with us for $10, $20, $50 or even a $100?

Tips to Guarantee Failure

1. Always try to do what is fair.

It is amazing how many bad decisions, or non-decisions are made based on the merits of what is 'fair'. It can seem at times that being fair has become the ultimate virtue. Only problem is - doing what is fair isn't always the same as doing what is right. Too many times we get locked in this box of trying to be fair, instead of just doing the right thing. Employers don't want to give a high performing employee a bigger raise than under performing employees because - "It's not fair". I don't know who come up with the idea that - What you can't do for all, don't do for anyone - but it's idiotic. What you can do for one, do for one.

If you always try to be fair, failure is sure to be achieved. Do what is right.

2. Never hurt any one's feelings.

Do you or your organization often find yourself making decisions based on what will do the least harm to people's feeling instead of what will do the most good to the cause? If so, failure is all but assured. I'm not suggesting that we should be insensitive to people's feelings, but that we should choose the best path, not the path of least resistance. I've counseled many people who allow inappropriate conduct to go on with with the opposite sex in the workplace because they didn't want to 'offend' their co-worker. Offend better to offend? Your spouse and kids or the flirt?

If you're the boss and you allow a poor employee to hurt the company because you don't want to 'hurt feelings', then you need to fire yourself.

Bill Cosby said, "I don't know what the key to success is, but I know that the key to failure is to try to make everyone happy."

3. Appoint people with position and entitlement to be the decision makers.

If you don't have the best leaders and most discerning people around you, you are sure to fail. Yes, it's a paradigm shift, but get over it. If you're a church and the people who've been there the longest to be the only voices that get heard, say hello to failure. Get the best, brightest, most skilled, wisest people in decision making positions - not necessarily the most liked, longest tenured, loudest, well funded people.

4. Compromise the mission to get everyone on board.

Unity is sometimes best achieved by subtraction. There is only power in numbers if everyone is going the same direction.

Perry Noble, Senior Pastor of NewSpring Church in South Carolina recently posted this article on Why he thinks the best days of the Church are ahead.

I Agree! Amen, Perry!

As I survey the landscape of church in America I am not buying into to the “doom and gloom” that some people seem to take joy in declaring…

IN FACT, I believe the opposite…I seriously believe the churches best days are ahead of her.
Acts 2 wasn’t something that happened that we are supposed “to get back to,” it was where we STARTED FROM…and should be FOUNDATIONAL and not just some ideal we strive for…
And I’m seeing that!

I see leaders stepping up and leading with CONVICTION and PASSION…and begging God for HIS permission instead of begging committees for their approval!

I see Jesus being preached and repentance being demanded…and people RESPONDING in droves because THE GOSPEL, not some non-eternal agenda, has taken center stage.

I see churches being planted and video campuses getting started by people who are more interested in seeing birth given to babies rather than trying to resurrect the dead.

Before there was Twitter...

There was the pithy public bathroom stall inscriptions usually tallying 140 characters or less. Not to totally disgust you right now, but I had to visit a Walmart public restroom this week and found myself starring at this little work of graffiti. As you can see it reads, "Jesus died for you...What can you do for Him?...John 3:16."

The answer that initially came to my mind was, "We can quit vandalizing other people's property!" After all at some point there will be a man or woman who has to clean or repair this door because of some one's really poor attempt at spreading the gospel message - what will their thoughts be?

Maybe the problem in the church today isn't a lack of spreading the message that Jesus saves, but how we do it.

Why Churches Fail

Found this very stimulating article on why churches fail. I've seen this very pattern happen many times.

Why We Fail…Don Dudley
First reason: Vision.

Regardless of who you are or what books you have read, if you attend a church, they have a vision. I don’t care if they are a house church, mega-church, mainline, or inter-denominational; at one point, there was a vision. If it is / was a good vision, it starts with the Gospel and transformation. Everything else (aesthetics, methods, music style, etc.) comes secondary.
It’s all down hill from here.

The problem is, most people do not pick out what church they go to based on vision. Instead, they pick through secondary things. Very few people research what the church stands for before they go. They research the style and MAYBE the doctrinal stances.

This leads to dissension.

When we jump into a church with both feet only to find we, ourselves, do not align with the vision, we burn out quickly. We think of all the activities as pointless. The outreach events are not our idea of a “good,” so we dislike it (our pride comes into play here too). Soon we start bashing the church: “You know, I like the people, and the music is good, but it is too….[you fill in the blank].”

Often, we are left with only a few people who still see the vision and chase it. The rest are just consumers. Arguments flair up between those who have completely bought into the vision, and the rest. People get upset and leave the church.

Then the church panics.

Once people start their exodus to another church (which they will probably not like), we adapt our vision into marketing so we can fill the newly vacated seats. Instead of reaching the ones we originally were called to reach, we start reaching those who will give us committed attendance. Then the cycle starts over again. On average I would say most people spend about a year at a church before it becomes boring to them and they move on. After many cycles, most churches will fall apart and close their doors. Others will just continue to go through the motions as long as the people will let them. Anyone who still clings to the vision is looked at as an odd ball and “old fashioned.” The pastor is no longer regarded as the one who leads the vision (even if it was his in the first place) but as the “face” of the church for marketing purposes.

JUST STOP DOING IT.

Really. Stop jumping from church to church because of their style and methodology. Instead of going to the churches website to find out what the church looks and feels like, go and look at the vision. Go for something other than secondary things. Does the vision hold true to the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19-20)? Do they do it in a way that seems to emphasis your current gifting? Do you feel you could be a beneficial part of their mission? If you answer no to any of these, either the church is not good (because it lacks the element of spreading the Gospel), or you are not good for it.

If you are looking for a social club or just similar demographics, church is the worst place to find them. All you will be doing is ruining the ability to accomplish the vision. You will become the “problem” with the church. Instead of helping them do what God has called them to do, you will become an advocate for the enemy and a hindrance.

Think long and hard before you join arms with a church.
You really have to ask the question: “Why am I going there?”

Think Big!

Ever heard the expression, "That's good enough"?
I sure have...truth is I've used it before. Lately I've been forcing myself and encouraging others to ask another question..."Good enough for who?"
Good enough for Brad, or good enough for Jesus Christ? I believe many times it is easy for us to become complacent with "good enough."

God deserves better though. Especially when it comes to how his body, the church, goes about it's mission to spread the gospel to the ends of the earth. It's time we stop accepting, embracing and even celebrating mediocrity. It's time to strive to make a BIG impact on our culture.

This Sunday at South Harriman Baptist we're launching a new series titled "Think Big." Let me encourage you to be there at 11 am.

It's time to do away with "good enough" and begin Thinking BIG!

Stop Time

Tony Morgan had this insightful word on his blog. I need some Stop Time...what about you?

In music, there’s a term called “stop time.” It’s when, temporarily, all the music accompaniment stops in order to highlight a solo vocalist or instrumentalist. It’s not unusual for jazz artists to use stop time. For a moment, the rhythm stops, all the other instruments pull back, and the band creates space for the soloist to improvise.

I’ve seen “stop time” work with my kids as well. Instead of planning every moment of their waking hours, from time to time we push the pause button and create space. We don’t set the agenda. We give them time to do their own thing. We don’t respond to the “I’m bored and have nothing to do” pleas. We let them figure it out. It’s fascinating to watch how creative our kids get when we give them time to improvise.

I love long car trips. When the drive is long enough, my mind will start to wander. I do some of my best thinking driving down the highway. Some of my most creative moments have been behind the wheel. Sometimes I wonder if I need to schedule regular road trips just to be more disciplined about creating thinking time in my life.

In an age when email, social networking and mobile technology make us continuously available, we probably need to create more stop time. In a season when there are always more meetings and task lists and projects to complete, we probably need more stop time. If you are frustrated by the lack of creativity in your organization or your personal life, it’s probably because the rhythm is constant and the accompanying instruments are too loud and you haven’t created space to improvise.

“Before daybreak the next morning, Jesus got up and went out to an isolated place to pray.”

When was the last time you scheduled some “stop time?”

There has been some controversy, exaggerated in my opinion, over President Obama's speech to America's School children. Some conservatives went straight off the deep end with their everything liberals do is a conspiracy to warp America. I always cringe when this happens, and it seems to happen too often. I cringe because I think it hurts the cause of conservative/libertarian values. I have no problem with the health care debate - that is a huge, and legitimate issue to disagree on. The President addressing and challenging our children to pursue excellence in the classroom - not a big deal.

Of course many liberals do the same thing. They attempt to make meaningful arguments as to why Sarah Palin is the American version of Iran's Mahmoud Ahmadi Nejad. When they do so, it totally hijacks their sanity and ideas. I can't take anything they say seriously when I read such idiocy - and the their side won't take what conservatives say seriously when we go conspiracy theory at every Obama move.

Lane's first win

Well, I enjoyed this past Saturday's Tennessee Football game. The common theme has been, "Well it was western Kentucky." It was...but we scored 63 points. Last Season we scored just over 200 for the SEASON. We're in around 30% of last years scoring already!

Crompton looked as if he might be able to play QB at the D1 level. Last year he looke NAIA at best.

Our Freshman really impressed me. Bryce Brown looks to be the real deal.

UCLA, I look forward to welcoming you to Knoxville, Big Orange Style!

A little sabatical

I've been a relatively avid blogger for 4 years or so now, which amounts to around 350 posts here at BradRaby.com, but I needed a little break. It was unannounced, so for those who come here regularly - sorry I didn't give you any notice. In the last three weeks here's a little of what has transpired for me:

1) My baby girl Rylee has turned 6 months old! Wow, she has changed my life. I love her and her mother so much.

2) I've accepted the role of interim preaching pastor at South Harriman Baptist Church while we look for a senior pastor. South Harriman is a great local expression of the body of Christ and it is my honor to preach the Word of God every Sunday. We're in a series called Directionally Challenged...check it out HERE.

3) In the Student Ministry we've been excitedly watching the Construction of our new Student Center. Check out the progress for yourself HERE.

4) Hey, IT'S FINALLY FOOTBALL SEASON BABY! Go VOLS! And what would football season be without some drama from Brett Favre!

5) Did I mention that I will be attending the Colts vs. Patriots game on November 15th. So pumped.

Thoughts and Reflections from my 10 year High School Reunion

1.) Holy Cow!, It's been a decade since I was in High School. Time flies!

2.) Remnants of distant memories can be brought to life again when you are around the people you created them with. It was easy to remember the funny moments, unique traits that apply only to my High School mates, Football games, etc.

3.) It's weird how some people look very similar to the way I last saw them 10 years ago, and some of us (I include myself in this category when I see pics from 10 years ago) look quite different.

4.) We aren't kids anymore, although many of us have kids. I think the DJs were pretty disappointed in how wild we were NOT.

5.) The 10 year reunion made me want to stay in better touch with my High School friends. I had lunch with one less than a week later. After graduation I couldn't wait to get away, and going off to college and moving to Florida was great for me. However, 10 years later I want to reconnect.

6.) I graduated High School with some really great people.

1 is a missionary in the Middle East
1 is a doctor and has done incredible medical/humanitarian work in a third world country, and has a passion to use his gifts to do more.
Several are teachers - need I say more? Some of which work with kids in what is perceived by many as hopeless situations.
Several are passionate about their faith in God and desire for redemption and good in mankind.
Several are in public service.
Several are serving or have served our country in the military.
We love our children. I know that seems normal and not necessarily something to list as admirable - but I've seen some pretty unloving family scenarios in my line of work.

Our teachers said they had high hopes for our class of '99. I'd say we're off to a good start in the first 10 years.

7.) Social Networking has changed things drastically in our culture. It's great to stay up-to-date via Facebook etc.

8.) Fashion has changed much more for the ladies than for the guys! Wow, those puffy shoulder formal dresses are hilarious.

9.) I really wish I could have reconnected with several people who couldn't make it. Maybe another time.

10.) There are several things I would do differently if I could go back in time. However, I don't want to go back in time.

This weekend is the one year anniversary of passing of Mike Ward. I didn't know Mike well at all, as a matter of fact we had only had a couple conversations. However, the legacy he left in his family and friends make me feel like I knew him.

Watching the grace that Bev, Logan and Abby have lived this past year has been inspirational to me. Logan the student has discipled his youth pastor by living for and proclaiming the Glory of God. Bev's words at church after camp demonstrated the strength of a woman who is clinging to the cross - the Anchor of our Hope. Abby's infectious spirit of joy...well it's a joy to be around.

I love you guys. And in remembrance here is the repost of "Painfully Beautiful from 1 year ago.

Many of you readers out there have seen the news story of Mike Ward. Mike and his family were on vacation in Florida where a strong rip-tide current began sweeping his daughter several yards into the ocean. Mike went in to save her, and another girl. The girls were saved, but Mike was overwhelmed and did not make it.

Mike, his wife and two teenage children are members of South Harriman Baptist Church, which I now serve in as an Assistant Pastor.

I spent a couple of hours with the Beverly, Logan, and Abby yesterday. It is a dreadfully painful time. The heartache and the shock is still very real. There was weeping from dozens of family and friends there to support them. The grief of a lost husband and father ran deep, very deep.

Yet, as I stood there praying silently, what I saw was beautiful. A band of brothers and sisters in Christ providing unending support, care, and love for this family. Men who drove through the night to escort the body of their deceased friend back home. A 14 year-old teenage man who told me, "God will give me the strength, I know it." A broken family trusting in a loving God. A mountain of food and provisions for the week. People I've only known for a couple of weeks - people I'll now remember for a lifetime.

What I witnessed last night was the arms of Jesus, in the form of the church, wrapping this family tight with with His love. Love for a family, whose husband and father, had lived just as the Savior:

Giving his Life for another.

Just a Taste

This morning I woke up and checked the news...not in a newspaper of course, but online. The headlines on most new sites have something to say about North Korea launching 7 missiles as a protest or something to the US on our National Freedom Holiday.

The thought that came to my mind was simple: "What if these people in North Korea, and others in the world could just get a taste of what we celebrate today."

Today I'll join millions of other Americans grilling out and watching fireworks with my family. Celebrating in full what it means to be free. It's easy to take for granted - seems I do just about everyday.

Later on, I checked my Twitter, and saw Brad Powell's tweet: "Happy Freedom day. Hope you're experiencing the ultimate freedom. John 8:36 - So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed."

If only people could taste the freedom found in Jesus Christ. The grace and forgiveness that is free to us, but wasn't for the One who paid for it. May we celebrate freedom today, but more so may be pray that people receive freedom!

I haven't talked it up much...I'm not sure why...maybe because it is pretty intense...maybe because it's message is just sinking in...I don't know.

Well, yesterday we returned home from Student Life Camp in Gatlinburg, and it was FLIP! (Had to be there kinda thing...I guess across the pond in England the expression 'flip' is to say something is awesome, great, off the chain etc.)

I've been to, or lead groups to somewhere close to 15 camps. This years was out of this world like no other. Jesus met with us. Jesus changed us.

I'll share more here real soon as I get some of the pictures and videos together.

Let God do the fighting.

We all have battles. We all have enemies. We all get mad. Real mad. We even have good reason to fight, but there is a better way.

David had done absolutely nothing wrong to Saul. In actuality David had preserved Saul's kingdom from the hands of the Philistine army. David had done for Saul what no one else was willing to, or could do.

However, David found himself constantly on the run for his life from the King of Israel.

Then one day there was a golden opportunity for revenge. There was an easy payback. There was even encouragement from everyone around David to get 'even' - no one would blame him after all. But David didn't. He didn't take his revenge, he didn't get even, he didn't fight.

In 1 Samuel 24 David was in a cave unbeknownst to Saul. It seemed like the opportune moment to strike a deadly blow and end this real life - life or death game of hide and seek. However, David was bigger than his enemy. David let God take care of his critics and his enemies. In verse 6 & 7 David said to his men in response to their urging for him to fight Saul:

"He said to his men, "I swear before the Lord: I would never do such a thing to my lord, the Lord's anointed. [I will never] lift my hand against him, since he is the Lord's anointed." With these words David persuaded his men, and he did not let them rise up against Saul."

Charles Stanley is the pastor of First Baptist Church of Atlanta. He has been a faithful pastor for many years. When you see one of the In Touch broadcasts on TV, you see a pastor and a local church that God has used mightily in Atlanta and all over the world. You might be surprised how things were in the beginning though. Stanley was a man who would not compromise the message of the Word of God. It seemed to some that he spent too much time emphasizing evangelism. He had numerous enemies in the church when he began his ministry there. Influential enemies. During one especially contentious business meeting at the church one of those enemies actually punched him right in the face.

What happened next won the day. Instead of getting up and physically defending himself. Charles Stanley calmly, and peacefully responded to the man's punch with grace.

That night the battle was won. Not by Stanley, but by God. He had refused in months prior to air his defenses from the pulpit, and on that night he had refused to even respond to violence thrust upon him. He had been, however, praying for months that God would remove the enemies of the Gospel in his church. As he said years later, "I fought the battle on my knees".

We can fight, or we can let God fight for us.

Here's a good principle from my Quiet Time this morning. I'm studying 1 Samuel right now. In chapter 8 Samuel has grown older - and like Eli, his children have wandered from the LORD. This, along with the pressure to conform to what all the other nations around them were doing prompted the people of Israel to ask Samuel to appoint a king over them for rule.

They already had a King, but were really good at rejecting His Word. They wanted a human king like everybody else. Here is how it reads in the HCSB:

1 Samuel 8:4-6a: 4 So all the elders of Israel gathered together and went to Samuel at Ramah. 5 They said to him, "Look, you are old, and your sons do not follow your example. Therefore, appoint a king to judge us the same as all the other nations have."
6 When they said, "Give us a king to judge us," Samuel considered their demand sinful..."

That last expression: "Samuel considered their demand sinful" caught my attention because of what Samuel did next. We might expect Samuel to go into mighty prophet mode and just let the nation of Israel have it with a hell fire brimstone sermon, but that wasn't Samuel's next move.

I might have expected Samuel to reason with them about the benefits of the Judge system. You might expect Samuel to simply ignore their request and remind them that they already have a King. But that's not what Samuel did next. Check this out:

1 Samuel 8:6b "...so he prayed to the Lord." Samuel took his battle to the Lord in prayer first.
Furthermore, this is what really stood out to me this morning, and I hope you will consider it too: Samuel made sure his thinking ("Samuel considered their demand sinful") was in line with God's thinking.

I think it is a wise lesson for me to learn to pause before I interject my opinion on various situations, and make sure what I think is aligned with what God thinks.

So here is what is going through my mind at 10:26 pm on Thursday evening.

- Rylee is sleeping, and unless she has an unusual night will sleep till almost 8AM tomorrow. I am really loving this stage more than the get up every 2 hours in the middle of the night. Rylee is 3 months and 1 week old today. Time Flies.

- This affects me deeply in ways I never imagined before Rylee.

- I love God's Church and how He is using people all over this globe for his glory. NewSpring baptized about 800 people this month. Take that Satan!

- The NBA is just 'ehh' to me these days.

- I love it when some of my old time fundamentalist friends come to the dark side.

- Skype is amazing. This week I talked with my cousin in Baghdad and counseled some friends in Florida.

- Barack isn't as bad as one side of the isle thinks.

- Barack isn't as good as one side of the isle thinks.

- I'm more excited for Student Life in Gatlinburg than my students are. Louie Giglio, Steve Fee, David Crowder Band, Leeland...oh yeah, I'm stoked.

Luke, the young boy in the Yankee's hat was diagnosed with a brain stem glioma (inoperable tumor) less that a year ago. Through various treatments Luke had seen much improvement in his condition. However, there have been many setbacks of late and the the family recently received the heart wrenching news that there is nothing left that the doctors can do, or the family can bare to put young Luke through. His time is limited and he was been sent home to spend time with his family.

Luke's grandparents Pete and Sylvia Charton are members of our church family at South Harriman Baptist. Please keep this family in your prayers as they face these difficult days.

I'm a big fan of Crimson Flow, a brand new band, not just because I like their music, but because they are good friends. Eric and his lovely wife Anissa both attended Tennessee Temple U where I am also an Alumnus. I know they love God, and His Church.

A Twilight Critique

My friend Joel sent me an e-mail with this sarcastic critique of Twilight - the latest craze amongst many young people. (Both movie and books)

Joel, like me just isn't into teen vampires. Nothing against you Twilight fans - it's just not our 'thang'.

So, I post his provocative summary of Twilight:

For those of you who knew the movie Twilight wouldn't be worth the $9.50 to see it in the theater, don't waste two hours of your life watching the DVD! Here is the summary (my version of course), so you don't need to bother with it!

Vampire guy - "Oh, I'm soooo in love with you that I want to suck all your blood out and kill you. Let's go stare at each other."

Girl - "Wow, It's not at all creepy that you watch me while I'm sleeping. Let's go stare at each other."

Vampire guy - "It's not private enough in the deep center of the forest of the Pacific Northwest. I want to take you up higher into the trees so we can stare at each other."

Girl - "Oh your skin is all sparkly like a mermaid which is not at all girly. Lets go stare at each other."

Vampire guy - "A horrible vampire inexplicably more evil than I (somehow I'm not evil) wants to suck all your blood out and kill you! Don't worry, I will get my dad to kill him. Let's go stare at each other."

Girl - "I'm laying in the hospital dying cuz you almost sucked out all my blood. Lets stare at each other."

Vampire guy - "Let's go to prom so we can not dance and stare at each other."

Girl - "I will hurt and lie to my whole family so that we can go stare at each other. Please make me a blood sucking vampire just like you."

This was all of the dialogue from Twilight. The rest of the movie was spent staring at the two lovers staring at each other.

This week James Sams, a senior at Roane County High School was killed in a head on collision. His family and friends are grieving and mourning deeply. The pain is no doubt excruciating. That made last night's FUEL service a little different. I knew we would have some hurting young people who had lots of big questions.

I thought the best thing to do was talk about Hope. So with the help of Louie Giglio and his talk "Hope when life hurts most" we did that.

7 Students trusted Christ, another 8 rededicated their lives to the savior.

Some were reminded of the Hope that is in the Cross of Jesus Christ.

It has been a painful week for many. A week of great loss. But last night...last night was a night of great victory!

Julie, Rylee and myself headed to Nashville yesterday for a day at our State's Capital. I had some official business - praying to open the Senate session, for which my uncle Ken Yager is a member of.

Funny thing - I thought I was the guest of honor - until after I stepped away they introduced the real guest of honor. Country Music Singer Marty Stuart. I took 30 seconds to read my Biography, and 30 minutes to read his. BTW, his hair looks like that in real life.

Butt Paste

A couple years ago Perry Noble, pastor of NewSpring Church in South Carolina, was describing life after his daughter was born. In one post he described his discovery of Butt Paste, a diaper rash ointment. I was looking at a tube of Butt Paste that I had been given for Rylee, and thought I would track down the post Perry wrote describing the best uses for Butt Paste in Churches.

Here are some of my favorites:

For the guy that always complains that the music is too loud…hand him a tube of buttPaste–he will calm down and begin to enjoy the sound.

For the person who gets mad because you did not shake their hand–just give them a tube of buttpaste. That way they know you care.

For the person who claims that you must teach reformed doctrine–explain to them as you are giving them their buttpaste that they were predestined to receive it; after all, not all people can receive buttpaste.

For the free will person–explain to them the reason they have never received buttpaste is simply because they never have asked for it. BUT…warn them that, if they are not careful they could lose their buttpaste!

For the person who wants you to preach from the KJV–harken them to goeth forth to receiveth the buttpaste in a manner that will calmeth them down.

For the person who has so little to do that they have time to be "concerned" about everything others are doing - some Butt Paste could help relax their pain in the butt issues.

For the people who are upset they didn't have input on which brand of plastic dinnerware used at the church picnic - some Butt Paste will soothe the pain.

SHBC Students getting things done!

Last week, 30 or 40 of our students along with some students from Bryan College went to work at Bowers Elementary School.

I believe the church desperatly needs to move beyond the 4 walls of it's meeting place and enter into our communities to serve the world - as Jesus did.

That's what these students did - check out some of the work, which included moving about 10,000 lbs of junk!

Your Friendly Neighborhood Spiderman

You may have heard the news story that aired recently about an 11 year-old autistic boy who was having trouble on his first day at a special needs school. As the story goes he was so nervous that he climbed out his classroom window and began hanging over a 3rd story ledge. The school officials could not get the young child to come back into the classroom, so they called the fire department to come and help. Upon arrival, one of the firemen overheard the boy’s mother and teachers talking about how much he loved comic superheroes. So the firefighter ran back to the station to get his Spiderman suit that he uses in schools to liven up fire drills.

When the fireman showed up in the window wearing the Spiderman suit the young boy smiled, and climbed into his arms. He was rescued by Spiderman.

When I read that story, I couldn’t help but think of the church. We are called by God to do everything we can to help save a life.

This fireman did what was necessary to save a young boy’s life. Here are some things that stood out to me from the news story:

1) He didn’t wait around to get permission and approval from his fellow firemen. The situation was urgent, and the consequences of delayed action could have been tragic. He acted quickly and efficiently. Lesson: The consequences of people dying without Jesus are serious and tragic, so we need “a little less talk, and a lot more action.” What if it were your son out on the ledge?

2) He didn’t suggest -He did. Lesson: If you’ve ever said, “It would be good if someone did such and such…” ask yourself – “Why don’t I do such and such?”

3) His method of rescue was anything but your traditional fireman rescue. When the typical methods of rescue weren’t getting the job done, he went outside the box and did that which was necessary to accomplish his mission. Result: A young boy’s life is saved. Lesson: If what we are doing isn’t working, we need to stop. It doesn’t matter how sentimental, or fond we are of our method – if the mission isn’t being accomplished. Sometimes we lose sight of the mission, it is important to remember that the church is in the business of saving lives, not our way of doing things.

The scripture that came to mind when I finished the story, was the same that inspired the famous missionary Hudson Taylor – 1 Corinthians 9:22 “I have become all things to all men so that by all possible means I might save some.”

May we use ‘all possible means’ to save some!

5 year olds can remind you to be thankful

This week my nephews are visiting us...mainly to see Rylee.

Sometimes kids can be so blunt, that it is sweet at the same time. Such was the case this morning during breakfast.

Jay, my wild 5 year old nephew said to Julie out of the blue, "I heard your babies were dying, but this one [Rylee] isn't dying."

After he said that, I smiled, and thanked God above for a healthy little girl. Thanks be to God for His unspeakable kindness!

Moral Failure Prevention

I read recently yesterday on the steps a few pastors take to keep themselves from falling into the trap of adultery. A pastor can fail at something and the church still be OK, because failure is part of life. However, if a pastor fails morally in his marriage or the churches finances - he often injures the local body of Christ so severely that in some instances cripple churches for years.

I don't want to be one of the guys who hurts his wife and church. I love both, especially my wife. So, what measures do I take to keep myself out of temptation's snare?

1.) My wife has access to all my e-mail and social networking accounts. She has my passwords and if she wanted she could read through all my e-mails etc.

2.) I never go anywhere with a woman, other than my wife, alone. Never. Never Ever. There is no 'business' where there isn't a third party. This is a principle I recommend every man in every line of work abide by. There are some of you out there who think this may be extreme, and give all kinds of excuses for why you can't abide by this standard. You are kidding yourself. As NIKE used to say: Just Do it.

3.) I never counsel a woman alone privately. I always have another person in our presence, or notify someone else that I am counseling a woman, in which case I leave a windowless door open.

4.) I never give a teenage girl a ride home. If you do fellow youth pastors...you're stupid, and you better adopt this principle right now.

5.) I don't initiate hugs with women on a regular basis. When someone is hurting, or in need of encouragement I put my arm around them, or hug them for support sure, but I don't greet women my age or teenage girls with hugs. I hug senior adult ladies all the time.

Some of these may seem extreme, but I am extremely serious about protecting what I love.

A Recession is the least of some people's worries.

Our Retirement accounts are hurting. We can't buy the new boat we were planning on. We have had to move because we lost our job.

These are tough times for us, but nothing compared to what other people are going through on the other side of this planet. In Kenya there is a group of people referred to as the Maasai - a tribal culture, that John Shepherd of Calvary Road Ministries has been ministering to for 10 years. Their land is in a historical drought. Not the "don't water your lawn this month" kind of drought, but a livestock and people killing drought.

It is so serious that Calvary Road Ministries is raising $65,000 to feed 18-22 thousand people for 1 month. I know John, and his ministry - they are going to do everything they can to help these people spiritually and physically. Will you help them?

5 things i'm tired of hearing

5. "Slept like a baby." What does that mean? You sleep 2 hours then wake up to eat...sleep 2 hours, then wake up to eat...sleep 30 minutes, wake up to just cry a little??????????

I have a new baby, I don't want to sleep like one!

4. New Local Radio shows instead of syndicated ones. It started here in Knoxville with losing Jim Rome, now they are taking away the last part of Mike and Mike in the Morning - the best sports show in the USA for some more discussion on Jonathon Crompton and the Vols spring practice?

I love the Vols, but our local talent is killing me. Please I'm tired of hearing it!

3. "Let's meet about it." Discussion and idea exchange is important, but I go to way to many meetings. How about: Let's 'Do it'.

2. "We want to keep everybody happy" Since when did our mission in life become pleasing men. What about God? I wander how many times we kept God unhappy because we kept 'everybody' happy?

1. Contemporary and Old Fashioned. I am so exhausted at the contemporary vs. traditional debate. I don't want the 'Old Time' Religion. I want an up-to-date, relevant, "can help me where I am at" relationship with Jesus Christ. There is nothing Old Fashioned about God. He is I AM, not I WAS.

I'm tired of God being put in any box - whether it be the box the organist sits on, or the box you store your electric guitar. Worship, Spirituality, and Righteousness have been defined by styles of music and ministry for too long.

If you think God only likes the music you like, whether it be Martin Luther or Mercy Me, get over yourself.

The Pendulum Swing

On February 20th Julie and I had our first child , Rylee Grace. The first three days were filled with the joy and excitement of our beautiful new born miracle. We were just in awe of how precious this little child was to us.

Then, on Monday we brought her home and all the sudden ‘it’ hit me. Those of you who are parents must know what I mean. For a while the pendulum of elation of her coming into the world swung to feeling the weight of the world on your shoulders. All the sudden I realized I had to take care of this little girl, provide for her, protect her, teach her the ways of the Lord. It was an emotional moment for me. I find myself checking on her every noise, squeak and cry. I am so attentive to her every need.

After a few hours of those feelings something bigger dawned on me. As much as I love Rylee – it doesn’t even compare to the Heavenly Father’s love for us! In that moment I imagined how in tune God is to our every noise, squeak and cry. He loves us with an extravagant love.

After all – ‘Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.’ – John 15:13

Somewhere around 6:15 AM this morning Rylee ____ Raby was born. She is 6lbs. 3oz and 18.5 inches long. Julie is doing fine. It was a difficult labor and delivery that ended in and emergency C-Section. I felt like I was living an episode of ER, which is much more enjoyable on TV. We appreciate all the well wishes and prayers for both Baby and Mother. Enjoy the photos and video. - Brad

You Asked For It Answers...Part 2

OK, there were a few questions I couldn't get to in the sermon last Sunday night. So I am going to post them here tonight.

Question: Why Jesus never spoke directly about homosexuality......tying in with that, the verse where it says homosexuals, liars, adulterers, etc. will not enter the kingdom of heaven.......why we just grasp onto the homosexual part.....again, holler if you want me to find the reference. (I attended a conference once where a woman held up a poster that said, "What Jesus Said About Homosexuality." In the middle was a tiny little empty square. Her point was how we grab onto that sin and ignore our sins like overeating, covetousness, gossiping, etc. We tend to rank sins as humans.

Answer: As to the second part of the question, I actually addressed this issue here on www.bradraby.com a few months ago. You can read my post where I linked to an article by Johnny Hunt HERE.

As to the first part of the question (Why Jesus never spoke directly about homosexuality): This isn't entirely accurate. Jesus referred to Sodom in 5 different places in the Gospels (Matthew 10:15; 11:23, 23; Luke 10:12; 17:29). Sodom was known, obviously, for homosexuality. Anytime it is referenced in scripture it brings with it an emphasis on immoral behavior.

Secondly, there is a significant cultural argument today that didn't exist 50 years ago much less 2000 years ago as to the moral view of homosexuality. Why would Jesus hammer away at something that wasn't a common matter of debate?

Third, Jesus affirmed the Old Testament numerous times, and commissioned the apostles on what to teach. The apostles made it clear that homosexuality was considered sinful.

Fourth, Jesus could have addressed it, but as John says not everything Jesus said or did could be recorded.

There is no doubt in my mind that the church looks at homosexuality in a very hypocritical way. Make sure you check out the link above which clarifies that point.

Question 2: What about the time when Jesus' life is not detailed for us, between the time he was 12 and his ministry the last 3 years of his life?

Answer: Well, there is very little that we know about Jesus from the time He was 12-30. What we do know is what Luke 2:52 says about Him: "And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men."

Jesus no doubt continued to work as a construction/carpenter worker with Joseph. The absence of Joseph in the Gospels after Luke 2 and Jesus commending His mother Mary into the care of John on the cross causes me to assume that Joseph either died during those years, or left. The first seems more likely.

I wish there was more recorded about his teen and young adult years, but we'll just have to wait to we get to heaven to ask Him.

Question 1: What about paradise? It is spoken of in Luke 23:43. Some people say the Lord was there for three days after His death, and then took all the people waiting for Him to heaven when He left. What happened to paradise?

Question 2: What about the people who died during the flood, did they all go to Hell, or did some go to heaven?

Question 3: Who has the ultimate power of taking a life? God or Satan?

Question 4: Matthew 5:31, 32 is explained in my study bible that the only exception given by Christ for divorce is for the cause of fornication. It is clear that adultery or fornication is a legitimate ground for divorce. However, the legitimacy of the divorce does not necessarily establish the legitimacy of remarriage.My question is that if a couple divorces due to fornication, can the faithful one ever have a relationship with another - or would that also be considered adultery?

Question 5: What about the verse, where it says “let your women keep silent in the churches” ?

Sunday was my birthday, and I received numerous B-day wishes from people all over, and am so thankful for the thoughts.

I received a late birthday gift from God this morning and wanted to share it with you. It comes from my quiet time in John 17. The chapter is an awe inspiring look into the life of Christ as He prays for God's will in His life, His disciples life, and in our life.

This morning was one of those days in which something I had read numerous times before jumped off the page as brand new and overwhelmed me emotionally. It happened in verse 23. "I am in them and You are in Me. May they be made completely one, so that the world may know You sent Me and that You have loved them just as You have loved Me."

That expression...that God the Father loves me as he loves God the Son...God loves me as much as He loves Jesus...WOW! I have asked the question "How could God the Father allow His Son to die for sinners on a cross?" Because He loves this sinner as much as He loves Jesus!!! Oh my!

How could we ever feel unloved? What a gift!

I pulled into the hotel late Sunday night where our youth group is staying for the weekend retreat. The very first words out of any ones mouth came from one of our girls: "Hey Brad, I got saved today!"

We hear a lot of people talk about God. Actors thank 'God' when they are receiving their latest Academy award. Athletes thank 'God' for helping them win the big game. Watch TV for 30 seconds and you'll hear someone talk about their 'Oh my God'. We've all been asked what 'in God's' name are we doing?

There are a lot of opinions out there as to who God is, what God does, what God wants...and on and on.

Leaving a Legacy

In a press conference scheduled a couple hours from this post - Tony Dungy is expected to announce his retirement from coaching in the NFL. Tony began his career in Pittsburgh, and is mostly known for his two head-coaching gigs - in Tampa, and Indianapolis where he lead the Colts to the 2006 Super Bowl Victory.

I've written on Tony before HERE, HERE and HERE. His book Quiet Strength was one of my favorite reads of 2008.

I'll be honest with you - I'm a little sad on the inside that he is leaving. Tony is my favorite coach, on my favorite team, with my favorite player of all-time - any sport. (Peyton)

However, I also believe that while Tony Dungy will not be coaching on the sidelines for Indy next year, I don't believe that Tony Dungy is leaving the NFL.

Tony Dungy has left a legacy - a legacy that will live beyond his coaching days. Dungy is the real-deal. While I was a youth pastor in Tampa, FL for several years I had the privilege of knowing his pastor, and some of the people who know the Dungy family personally. They all testify to the fact that the person we see on TV - is the real life Tony Dungy.

Listen to his players and colleagues speak of him - there is never anything spoken that is less than complete admiration and respect.

All over the NFL - players, coaches, support staff, front office staff and beyond have been inspired by this mans courage to lead his life, his family, and his team with integrity, class, and godliness. His impact on the cities on Tampa and Indianapolis is untold. Tony's ultimate legacy, I think, are the countless other leaders he has mentored and trained to lead they way he did:

Faith, Family, Football. In that order.

What an example. What a Legacy.

Hoping to make the most of my failures in 2009

My New Years Resolution(s) for 2009 isn't going to be filled with a long list of things I wish to do. Just 1 general desire for this year: Learn from my failures.

John Shepherd III, spoke this past Sunday night at church about “Making the most of your failures”, and hit me like a ton of bricks. Why? Because it sounded like he was telling my story the last couple of years. John shared how he had be un-expectantly laid off from his dream job 18 months ago because his department was being done away with... a "It's not personal, it's just business" kind of deal.

The next thing I know Julie is sniffling a bit next to me and it feels like he was just talking with us.

So here's a little transparency for the whole world to read:

It was 16 months ago that I was having the best time of my life professionally. Then a good friend took me to the Village Inn and told me that my position was being eliminated. He was just the messenger. (FYI - I still don't understand why some people that make hard decisions have such a hard time facing those hard decisions, but I digress)

Just 4 week earlier my wife had went through a miscarriage, and now I have to tell her I'm without a job. I stayed at the diner and drunk several cups of coffee, avoiding the inevitable - that I would have to go home and tell Julie. I hoped that she would be asleep when I came in that night and I could try to think of a good way of telling her the next morning, but she wasn't. She wanted to know 'what was going on'.

I felt like a loser, to tell you the truth, a real loser.

I got a whole 4 weeks of severance pay, so needless to say the reality of "How do I pay the bills" set in immediately. Tried to get another job, failed wonderfully at that. Really didn't know what to do. Finally found a job, a mere 11 hours away from my house, that now was worth $30,000 less than what I paid for it - 1 year before.

So, we packed up, and I moved my beautiful wife into the basement of my parent's house. Not exactly what I had dreamed of 6 years ago this month.

My failure rating had risen to an all-time high.

6 months go by without a renter in our house, all the while my new Job is paying me 60% less than the one I lost – you can do the math. Financially we we’re getting beat into submission. Finally we got a renter, and thankfully one who pays his rent.

I liked working with the guys at Comcast, but it didn’t take long for the Telecom business to wear on me. I was made to do something else by God. I know He wants me to start a church, but at that time it seemed impossible – by my faith standards anyway.

A speaking invitation came from South Harriman Baptist Church to fill their pulpit on Sunday – I was thrilled because it meant I got to do what I loved to do. A week later they called me and asked me to consider being their Interim Youth Pastor – I did.

It’s a funny relationship. I love them, and I believe they love me, but we’re an odd couple. SHBC is a very traditional church, and I am a very untraditional pastor. From the outside, you wouldn’t imagine it could work, but it is. I’m having a good time, and we’re both hanging on for the ride.

Julie is 7 months pregnant, after two miscarriages – a miracle.

God is beginning to work. I have learned more in the last 16 months about life, than I did in the previous 16 years. My life had been pretty easy up till the summer of 2007. God has laid me out and put me onto my face about a half dozen times since. I’m pretty sure He has a good reason.

John concluded his message Sunday night by telling us how his 11 months of ‘failure’ has turned into one of his life’s greatest blessings. He now has a great new ministry that He loves etc.

I’m looking forward to writing that part of my story. (A portion of it should be written in early March with the birth of Rylee.) Till then, I want to learn from my failures – so I can be all God wants me to be in 2009.

Jesus is Not the Reason for the Season.

That sounds a little heretical, huh. Well it's not. Jesus didn't come to create the Nativity Story. He didn't come to just hang out here on earth - no He came for a specific REASON - The Angel told Mary to name the baby in the manger Jesus. Why? Because "He would save His people from their sins." The Reason for Christmas is ME. The reason for Christmas is YOU. Jesus came for US!!! That makes it a very Merry Christmas! I'm the reason for the season, you're the reason for the season, you're boss is the reason for the season, your kids are the reason for the season! Jesus Came for US! Have a Merry Christmas!

A Cultural Defect

There are several things I love about our American Culture these days:
- Art: Some of the traditionalists will disagree, but i think we're a pretty creative people.
- Generosity: We more charitable than the materialism preacher thinks.
- Sports: I love the capitalistic competitive nature that burns within us.
- High Definition: We're always making 'things' better.

However, there are some defects in the America way.

Today, I want to single one of them out: A Deficiency in National Pride.

Just about everyone on planet Earth has scene the video footage of an Arab Journalist throwing his shoes at President Bush. Since there was no physical harm done to the President - it has become somewhat comical. Everyone in the comedy realm is having some fun with it. That doesn't bother me too much.

What, however, is disturbing to me is the empathy that many Americans are showing for the man who displayed such remarkable disrespect OUR President.

Here is my issue: I don't care if you are in the 85% or whatever number that CNN says hates George W. Bush, or if you are a supporter of his - He is OUR American President, and applauding an Iraqi journalist for dissing OUR President to me is simply idiotic. You can disagree fundamentally with the War in Iraq, or whatever other Bush policy is out there, but have enough pride in your country, and that means expecting recently liberated Iraqi journalists to show your President some decency and respect.

So to you Mr.Blogger, Facebook Headliner, News Editor, and other fellow Americans: Have some pride...you know the kind you have for your favorite sports team...have it for you country.

Pregnancy Update

For our dear friends who reside outside of the Knoxville, TN area - here is an update on how the pregnancy is going.

As many of you know the past couple of years we have went through 2 miscarriages, one of which was connected with this pregnancy, as the doctors believe Julie must have originally been pregnant with twins. (For more info on that miracle, read THIS)

Everything has went smoothly so far. Julie is 6 months along and the baby girl...no name yet...is very healthy.

Keep us, and especially the two girls in your prayers.

This past week I enjoyed a great Thanksgiving with my family. So did 360 other people in our community thanks to the people of South Harriman Baptist Church who donated over 150 Thanksgiving meals last Tuesday. Here's a little video that shows what it looked like:

Well, that's what it would be if I were a Pastor in Orissa, India, where India's Communist Party estimates that more than 500 Christians have been killed by Hindu mobs in Orissa since late August.

Todd over at MMI linked to THIS World Net Daily news article siting the religious persecution of Hindu extremists who are "offering money, food and alcohol to anyone who murders Christians and destroys their homes."

Here's a little snippet form the article:

"Another Christian woman named Jaspina was told by neighbors, 'If you go on being Christian, we will burn your house and your children in front of you.' She and her family were forced to eat cow excrement to "purify" themselves of Christianity."

"Other Christians were doused with gasoline and told to participate in conversion ceremonies or be lit on fire."

This Thanksgiving you can bet I'll be thankful to be a Christian and a pastor here in the wonderful United States of America.

My Favorite Web Apps

Here is another answer to "How did you do that?". These are some of my favorite Web Apps (Applications) and what they do:

1. Spiral Frog - Download millions of songs and music videos for free. It is a subscription service that cost you nothing, plus is very hassle free.

2. WordPress - I have used WP to make simple, efficient, but also effective websites and blogs. For the latest example of how anyone can create a decent website go HERE.

3. Xdrive - 'Provided' free online storage for when I’m looking to back up important files. I am trying out other sites right now, and I'll let you know someday what i find.

4. Pandora - I use this site to create my own Internet radio station that plays my favorite genre of music. I'm using it while I type this post.

5. FotoFlexer - This is an online image editor. I designed the graphic below using it.

6. Google Analytics - I use this to track statistics to my blog and websites. 55.84% of you use Internet Explorer, 24.33% use Safari, 19.55% use Firefox, and 0.14% use Seamonkey as your Internet browsers...Just in case you wanted to know.

7. Blogger - I guess I should mention the web app I use to make this post :-)
